Why Your Perpetual Calendar Is Doomed To Become Obsolete

A recent report in the Guardian notes that scientists studying the Milankovitch cycles (the effect of alterations in the Earth’s rotation and orbit on climate) have determined to a high degree of accuracy things like the speed at which the Moon is receding from the Earth (very slowly) and as well have noted that the Earth’s rotation is slowing down by – hold onto your knickers, Gertrude – about 1/75,000 of a second per year. A day has 86,400 seconds, so a quarter of a day has 21,600 seconds. If we lose one second every 75,000 years, then in just 1,620,000,000 years, a year will be, more or less, exactly 365 days, making your perpetual calendar wristwatch obsolete.
